Welding Machine Maintenance
Question :
What is the proper way to maintain my welding machine so it can last longer?
Answer :
Actually maintaining and using a welding machine can be done simultaneously. Of course, different types of welding machine, different ways of treatment. Here are several types of welding machine and ways to treat them.
Open the engine’s cover then clean all of its components every three months with a compressor and clean the connections using a contact cleaner.
Do not overuse the welding machine more than its specified capacity. Each type has its own duty cycle, make sure to use it accordingly. Rest the welding machine for about 10 minutes after it exceeds its duty cycle capability. Make sure the connection between plug, holder stick cable, and the clamp mass are solid. Once operated, ensure that the fan works perfectly thus the engine components stay cool and not overheated.
- Spot Type Welding Machine. Check arm tip’s condition. The gap between two of the arm tips should not be too far away. Once a while, you can lathe the tip. Yet, once it’s worn-out, replace it.
- Water-Cooler Welding Machine (Thyristor AC/DC TIG ≥ 250 A & SPOT). Firstly, you have to make sure that the water circulates properly. Check the water channels and connections daily; make sure you find no leaks or clogged. Always uses clean water and replace water when dirty.
- Gas Welding Machine (TIG & MIG/MAG):
i. Use suitable gas for TIG machine, such as Argon ii. Check the gas line daily, make sure it has no leaks or clogged.
- Air Plasma Cutting Welding Machine
i. Dry the water in the regulator before and after use. ii. Check the airways and its connections, make sure it has no leaks or clogged. iii. Make sure that the air is completely dry because if it contains water, it may affect the gun torch.
- When welding, avoid coiled cables.
- Clean the electrode holder and ground clamp with wire brush before and after welding.
